Italy; Tuscany; Lucca: mosaic "ascension of Christ" (13th century) at front facade of Basilica of San Frediano. The only papal church in Lucca was built by order of Pope Paschal II; of 1104. The church; since 1957 a basilica minore; was built 1112 to 1147; but extended in 13th century. This caused the creation of the huge golden decorated mosaic on the front facade to Piazza San Frediano with the theme "ascension of Christ"; in the same period. The Basilica minor is dedicated to St. Fridianus (also: Frigidanus; Frigidan; Frigianu; italian San Frediano); who is buried in the church. San Frediano was a Prince from Ireland; most probably the son of King Ulaid and lived from 520 to 588. In 560 AD; he became bishop of Lucca; unrtil his death; on 18th of March; 588.
