Ireland; County Meath; city of Slane: degustation of organic Slane whiskey in Slane Whiskey Distlllery; at Slane Castle (Irish: Caisle醤 Bhaile Shl醝ne); built 1785 by architects James Gandon; James Wyatt and Francis Johnston. Slane Castle was bought; in 1703; by Brigade General Henry Conyngham; after the family had succesfully fought in the Battle of the Boyne (1690). Earlier owners were the Anglo-Norman Catholic family Fleming; moved out in 1701. The castle in its existing form was built under William Burton Conyngham and his nephew; the 1st Marquess Conyngham. Famous architect Francis Johnston (General Post Office GPO in Dublin) built as well the former main entrance to the castle; the gothic gates on Mill Hill. The Coyningshams came in as a Scottish Protestant family; during the plantations; in 1611. They had another property; near Donegal Town; which Charles Conyngham renamed into Mount Charles to honour himself; from which the title Earl of Mount Charles derives. In 1991; the Castle burned and had to be renovated; until 2001. Since 1981; rock and pop concerts are held at Slane Castle; invented by Henry Mount Charles; 8th Marquess Conyngham. Today; the castle can be visited; has a restaurant and bistro and has opened a new distillery in the premises; where Slane Whiskey is produced in ecological way. Nearby Slane Rock Farm is producing as well eco products and hosts guests. Across the hillside; there is Slane Hill; where St Patrick lighted the first Easter Fire in Ireland.
