Established in 14th century as part of the Terra Mariana (since 1346) and first mentioned in 1503 by Grand master of the Teutonic Order; Wolter von Plettenberg; it had a small harbour; since 16th century. People lived of forest works; a saw mill; a small wharf; and fishing. In 1704; czar Peter I (Peter the Great) named the village due to the poor life conditions of its inhabitants "Hungerburg" (hunger castle). In 1808; Hungerburg got its lighthouse. With the start of the railway line Saint Petersburg via Narva to Tallinn; Narva-Joesuu developed as a sea resort; in 1870; thanks to its 8 km long sandy beach; called Baltic Riviera. In 1873; it became an official spa town. After a terrible fire end of 19th century; the city; in those times also called Port Narva and Bad Narva (Narva Spa); got new infrastructure. The first Spa was built; in 1896; the first Sanatorium opened; in 1902. The Kursaal; first built of wood in 1882; fell to fire; in 1910; and was rebuilt in 1912 by Polish-Russian architect Marian Lalewicz. In 1913; the city of 2;500 inhabitants had annually 14; 000 guests.
