Estonia; Ida-Viru-County; village of Vaivara; Blue Hills: stone marked former war trench in front of Estonian World War II Blue Hills Memorial on Grenadier Hill; erected 1994; Grenadier Hill is one of three major hills which build the 5 km long stretch of the Blue Hills (also. Blue Mountains; Estonian; Sinim鋏d; Vaivara Sinim鋏d; German: Blaue Berge). Here; from 25th of July; 1944; to 10th of August; 1944; the Battle of Tannenberg Line (German: Schlacht um die Tannenbergstellung) which ended with a tactical victory of German troops; consisting mainly of German and international Waffen-SS units and supported by Estonian military units. The three hills of Blue Mountains are: 69;9 m high Western hill Tornim鋑i (English: Tower Hill; German: Turmh鰄e; also Liebh鰄e = Love Hill); the 83;2 m high Central hill Grenaderim鋑i; also called Porguaugu (English: Grenadier Hill; German: Grenadierh鰄e); and 84;6 m high Eastern hill Pargim鋑i; also called Lastekodum鋑i (English: Orphanage Hill; German: Kinderheimh鰄e): The Blue Hills Memorial (Estonian: Sinim鋑ede memoriaal) was installed; in 1994 and consists of a high cross and stones; built in form of a wedge to show the historic way of the approaching troops. As well; foundlings mark the course of the trenches of the German and allied Estonian and international Waffen-SS troops. Since 2007; there are as well three memorial stones in form of grave stones commemorating Estonian and international Waffen SS units which fought and died here; in 1944. The Blue Hills experienced as well military action in the Great Nordic War (1700 - 1721); in 1916 in World War I; and in 1919 during the Freedom War (Independance War) of Estonia against the Soviet Union.
