William James Glackens: Girl in Green Turban; William James Glackens; c. 1913; Oil on canvas; Philadelphia native William Glackens is best known for his early work as a member of the Ashcan School; a group of New York artists who focused on realistic scenes of urban life. This work dates from later in his career; when he had decided that being a true 'modernist' was more about bold form and color than about gritty subject matter. Glackens was continually inspired by the formal innovations of the European avant-garde. Here; for example; he seems to be channeling Matisse in his use of jarring color and decorative patterns.; Overall: 24 x 18 in. (61 x 45.7 cm)
