Maurice Denis: Mother and Child; Maurice Denis; c. 1895; Oil on canvas; Maurice Denis saw himself as the leader of a movement to revive religious art by investing everyday modern life with a sense of spirituality. This painting of a mother and child鈥攁 subject to which Denis returned repeatedly 鈥攑laces the traditional Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary in the setting of a nineteenth-century French home. As the young mother gazes down tenderly at her child; the blue-eyed infant grasps playfully at her collar and hands; her simple black gown recalls the quintessential urban costume of the Parisian woman. Additionally; her delicately rendered features resemble those of Marthe; Denis's wife; highlighting the artist's desire to find divinity in his immediate surroundings.; Overall: 16 x 12 1/2 in. (40.6 x 31.8 cm)
