Francisco de Goya: Portrait of Jacques Galos; Francisco de Goya; 1826; Oil on canvas; Goya was one of the great portraitists of his time. In 1786 he was appointed court painter for the Spanish crown; turning out important commissions for royalty and aristocracy. Here; in this more casual portrait painted much later in his career; Goya depicts a member of his inner circle. The sitter is Jacques Galos; the governor of a bank in Bordeaux; France; who handled Goya's personal finances. Goya had settled in Bordeaux in 1823 after fleeing Spain to escape the oppressive rule of King Ferdinand VII. The inscription at lower left translates to 'Don Santiago Galos; painted by Goya at the age of 80 in 1826.'; Overall: 21 3/4 x 18 1/4 in. (55.2 x 46.4 cm)
