Paul C茅zanne: Boy in a Red Vest (Le Gar莽on au gilet rouge); Paul C茅zanne; 1888-1890; Oil on canvas; C茅zanne lived in an apartment on the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris between 1888 and 1890. This painting of an Italian boy is one of the many figural works he produced at that location. While we know the boy's identity鈥攈e was a professional model named Michelangelo de Rosa who posed for C茅zanne several times鈥攖he artist didn't intend this as a portrait in the traditional sense. Rather; the painting is perhaps better understood as a study in human psychology and emotion. Shoulders slumped; mouth turned down; eyes staring into the distance; the boy seems a picture of melancholy.; Overall: 25 3/4 x 21 1/2 in. (65.4 x 54.6 cm)
