When the spinal cord is injured, damaged nerve fibers called axons are normally unable to grow back, resulting in a permanent loss of function. An NIH-funded research project on mice provides insight into why nerves don't regrow after injury and shows that increasing energy levels in damaged nerves can help them heal.
