Fat cells, light micrograph. Fat, or adipose, cells store fatty substances seen here as blue/green-stained globules and droplets which occupy almost the entire volume of the cell. The nucleus is displaced to the periphery of the cell. Fatty acids are a reserve energy source, stored as triglycerides and circulate as lipoproteins. Several nearby capillaries are present in the supporting connective tissue. Adipose tissue provides thermal insulation and may serve as mechanical protection for deeper tissues.
