Hubble Space Telescope (left) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST, right) images of the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, which lies 4.6 billion light years from Earth. The JWST image is a full-colour infrared image that is the deepest, most detailed infrared image taken to date (July 2022). In the JWST image the galaxy cluster acts as a gravitational lens, allowing even more distant galaxies (red arcs) to be seen.
