Light micrograph of chondrocytes surrounded by hyaline cartilage matrix, which they produce. When cartilage is growing the chondrocytes proliferate by mitosis resulting in chondrocyte pairs known as isogenous groups. Cartilage matrix consists of collagen, glycoproteins and other proteins that serve as rigid support and retain water for resisting compression. A thin rim of deeper staining territorial matrix around the chondrocytes provides protection for the cells. Methacrylate section, Toluidine blue stain. Magnification: x 580 when width printed at 10cm.
