La Paz, Bolivia - 19/20 May 2018 At an elevation of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level, La Paz - the de facto capital of Bolivia - is the highest capital city in the world. It is located in a spectacular valley, surrounded by hills and snow-capped mountains of the Altiplano; the most spectacular of these is Mount Illimani, at 4,570 metres (15,000 ft). This is a very crowded city, with houses clinging precariously to the valley sides. Unusually, unlike most cities, the higher up you go, the poorer the folk living there.
