Vancouver, Canada - 28 May 2010; no people in view. One of British Columbia's most popular attractions is a group of ten totem poles at Brockton Point in Stanley Park, Vancouver. Totem poles are monumental sculptures carved on poles, posts, or pillars with symbols or figures made from large trees, mostly western red cedar, by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. The carvings may symbolize or commemorate cultural beliefs that recount familiar legends, clan lineages, or notable events in the tribe.
