La Paz, Bolivia - 19/20 May 2018 At an elevation of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level, La Paz - the de facto capital of Bolivia - is the highest capital city in the world. It is located in a spectacular valley, surrounded by hills and snow-capped mountains of the Altiplano; the most spectacular of these is Mount Illimani, at 4,570 metres (15,000 ft). This is a very crowded city, with houses clinging precariously to the valley sides. Unusually, unlike most cities, the higher up you go, the poorer the folk living there. The new cable car system for La Paz, Mi Telefico, was completed in 2014. It is the longest such urban system in the world. It is also quick, efficient and universally loved.
