Duke of Gloucester at Scottish Revival of order of St. John, First Procession for 400 Years -- The Duke of Gloucester (left) and the Earl of Lindsay preceded by sword bearers as they walk in procession at Holyroodhouse. The Duke of Gloucester, as Grand Prior of the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem (oldest order of chivalry, dating back to the 11th century) attended a ceremony at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, in which the order was revived in Scotland. Representing the King, Supreme Head of the order, the Duke of installed the Earl of Lindsay as head of the order in Scotland. June 28, 1947.
