Scattered through the Sydney bushlands is a fading group of carvings that can never be replaced. They were made by long - dead aborigines. Few men, white or black, know how they were made: none knows exactly what they meant. The carvings themselves, on soft sandstone. are wearing away. Most anthropologists, afraid of vandalism, don't like talking about the location of aboriginal carvings. Few people besides bush- walkers have seen them. Other students believe that proper notices and railings would prevent vandalism, give Sydney people a new bush attraction. November 19, 1948.
