Voortrekker Memorial -- Piet Retief, Voortrekker hero, gazes over the Pretoria landscape. This is one of the four huge statues of Voortrekker leaders at the Gorners of the monument. South Africa is spending ?50,000 on a huge amphitheatre, seating 50,000, overlooking Pretoria, in memory of the Voortrekkers. They were the Dutch pioneers who settled at the Cape in 1652. After the British took over the Cape, the Voortrakkers headed north to establish their independence in the interior. The memorial stands on a hill which dominates a pass through which the Dutch drove their covered waggons in the great trek to the north. September 09, 1949. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).
