The U-boat originally had surrendered on May 10 to one of two destroyer escorts of the Atlantic Fleet 300 miles (482 kms.) south of Newfoundland. These escorts, still flanking the Nazi craft, delivered it to a point off the U.S. east-coast state of New Jer
