The summit, 4000ft. above sealevel was once twice as high. In A.D. 79 a tremendous burst blew off the top of the mountain, sending down rivers of lava and cascading hot ashes over Pompeli and Herculaneum, embalming a civilisation which twentieth-century travellers may still see. November 03, 1953. (Photo by B.O.A.C. Photograph).
