Floodlight On The 'Q.M.' -- Towering above the king George V drydock at Southampton is the gigantic hull of the Cunard-White Star liner Queen Mary (81,235 tons), outlined against the night sky by floodlights as she undergoes a six-weeks overhaul and renovation. The work includes the removal of the 50-ton concrete patch which had made the hull watertight since she grounded outside Cherbourg at the beginning of the year. Drydocking of the 'Queen Mary' inaugurates the annual winter overhauls of the Cunard-White Star transatlantic passenger fleet -an operation unequalled in any other country. November 10, 1949.
