Carrier 'Vengeance' Out of Home. Fleet Exercise - Firefly and Sea Fury aircraft line the deck of the 13,190 tons light fleet carrier HMS 'Vengeance' as it proceeded to Gibraltar for home fleet exercises, September, 1950. It was revealed on Sept. 14 that sand had been discovered in the filter arrangement of the lubricating system supplying the carrier's main machinery when she was at portsmouth. While the investigation into the incident was continuing, a second was reported after she had put into plymouth. This concerned a mis-adjustment of a main valve. An Admiralty spokesman referred evening Sept. 21 to a report that the aircraft carrier Vengeance had been taken Gibraltar Sept. 18 because of engine defect. September 22, 1950.
