Elections In Fiji -- Despatch of the ballot boxes is carefully checked by the Post Office staff to ensure safe delivery and return. Some boxes may go by cutter or schooner, others by mail vans to centres on the two main islands. The returning officer's main worry is that the inter-island vessels, carrying the boxes will be able to keep up to schedule, and not be delayed by being forced to take shelter from heavy seas or sudden squalls, thus upsetting carefully prepared time-tables.
