Irrigation Works-Cyprus -- Nearly complete. Workmen putting the finishing touches to the ditch when it approaches the weir after winding its way round the bottom of the Galini hillls. Because of the physical features of the country it is necessary to irrigate all land used for cultivation in Cyprus. Tanks are built all over the lowlands, some of then dating back to the Turkish occupation. These tanks are filled by the summer rains in the hills and the water carried by conduits and used for winter irrigation. A new canal is being built at Galini and when it is finished it will make over 1,000 denumes or 340 acres of barren land fit for cultivation. The construction will cost the Cyprus Government ?12,000 and is expected to produce a net profit of ?1,000 a year. September 14, 1951. (Photo by British Official Photograph).
