Irrigation Works-Cyprus -- General view of the canal. Because of the physical features of the country it is necessary to irrigate all land used for cultivation in Cyprus. Tanks are built all over the lowlands, some of then dating back to the Turkish occupation. These tanks are filled by the summer rains in the hills and the water carried by conduits and used for winter irrigation. A new canal is being built at Galini and when it is finished it will make over 1,000 denumes or 340 acres of barren land fit for cultivation.
