Elizabeth, Empress of Austria, a mild and retiring lady, met her death at the hands of an Italian anarchist, Luigi Luccheni, whose ambition was to be a regicide. He stabbed the Empress with a triangular rusty file as she was about to board a steamer on Lake Geneva. Luccheni was later imprisoned for life, but disappointed at not being executed he committed suicide. October 18, 1954.
