Most people leaving Kingsford Smith Airport for overseas are farewelled by crowds of friends and relatives. If a person happens to be a leading sportsman there are usually hundreds of fans to see him off. But in the passenger lounge at the airport today, a tall, distinguished man sat reading a paper by him-self (see picture above). When he boarded the BCPA DC6 for America he took his seat and returned to his paper. The man was Sir Howard Fiorey, co-discoverer of penicillin and one of Australia's most distinguished scientists. June 25, 1953.
