Red Hot River Splits Palma -- Thick smoke mushrooms from the Belching mouth of the Volcano as the Lava floods down to the villages below. Picture made the morning of July 12. The Volcano on Palma, one of the Canary Isles, is pouring out four rivers of Lava, which at night look like flowing fire. Several villages have been engulfed by the Lava, running in streams fifteen feet deep. One river, three quarters of a mile wide, is creeping toward the port of Puerto Naos. Trenches are being dug two miles from the city, but the tow will probably have to be abandoned. July 13, 1949. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).
