Radar Backstop -- This 17 foot antennae is one of the seven different types of radar carried on a 6,000 ton cruiser. To be mounted atop the masts of warships, the web-like antennae is designed to map the micro waves reflected from 'targets' within range of the equipment. Installation machinist Adolph Faulkner of Elmhurst, N.Y. poses in a baseball a catcher's stance before the radar backstop. In the background at the U.S. Steel's Federal shipyard here, the USS Spokane near completion. April 11, 1946.
