At a British port, the famous cruiser Shropshire, which took part in the bombardment of the Italian Red *****, was handed over by the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy as a gift from Britain to Australia, to replace H.M.A.S. Canberra, lost in action against the Japanese in the Solomons. A completer modern refit, in which British women workers took part, preceded the handling over. Mrs. Gentle, an electric welder, tells the BBC interviewer: "I'm making the steps safe for the Australian boys; they're grand boys". April 30, 1943. (Photo by BBC).
