German Collapse on Northern Front: Prisoners Pour in in "Chaotic Numbers" - German girls crying as the German prisoners are about to be moved back to the P.O.W. cages. Picture taken on May 2 at Wittenburg (east of Hamburg) during the British 6th Airborne Division's drive to Wismar, where they linked with the Russians on the next day. One hundred thousand prisoners were taken in one day alone by the British 2nd Army - German soldiers civilians and non-German "displaced persons" have made the P.O.W. situation so chaotic that surrender is now accepted only from senior German officers who must undertake to carry on the control of their troops in the area were they give themselves up. June 25, 1945. (Photo by British Official Photograph).
