Death Drama On The Sidewalks Of Fifth Avenue -- A spectator leans over the body of patrolman Maher, hoping to be of some aid. But the policeman had been instantly killed. Part of the form of Leonard Weisberg, the wounded cab driver can be seen in the foreground. Battle murder and sudden death more spectacular than any conjured by writers of fiction, took place on the sidewalks of fifth avenue and 34 street, in the heart of the crowded shopping section, following a holdup in an elevator of a building in 34th street. When the smoke of battle and cleared two men, one a policeman and one a civilian, were dead, three were wounded and the two payroll bandits, one of them seriously wounded, were in custody. The lens of a camera following the daylight horror here record the dramatic phases of the gunfight. January 14, 1941. (Photo by Acme Newspictures).
