Tee Relief Of Guernsey and Sark. Mrs. Hathaway the "Dame of Sark" These photographs, taken on May 14th., and 16th., show the people of Guernsey and Sark receiving their first British provisions since 1940. After D-day all German supplied food for the islands ceased too and the Germans at once started to kill off live stock and eat the islander's seed potatoes. Vegetables became more and more scarce. In Guernsey a communal feeding centre was established to which everyone brought whatever they could, soup was made in bathtubs and sold at 7?d a quart. On liberation day the relief ship arrived leaded down with a cargo of food, transport and military equipments The people of Guernsey cheered and laughed and cried. They had waited 5 years for this "And" said one woman "it was worth going hungry for". July 30, 1945. (Photo by PNA).
