Playing against Essex at Cambridge, G. H. G. Doggart and J. G. Dewes, of Cambridge University put up a new English cricket record scored 429 runs - Dewes 204 and Doggart 219. The previous record of 398 was held by W. Gunn and A. Shoewsbury and was set up in 1890.
