Millions of Australians are incorrigibly careless and forgetful. Proof of this comes from the Postal Department's dead- letter office. Throughout Australia, dead-letter offices now handle nearly 3,500,000 postal articles a year. A letter or parcel is sent to the dead-letter office only if the Post Office cannot deliver it because the address is illegible or insufficient. Most letters and parcels go to the dead-letter office because of insufficient address. But last year no fewer than 18,902 letters and parcels were posted without any address at all. November 3, 1949.
