The Volga Don Canal: On the 31st May, 1952, the Press inn the Soviet Union Reported that work on the Gigantic Volga Don Canal had been Completed. A Waterway linked the two main rivers of the Soviet Union, thus forming a Connection between the White and Baltic seas inn the North with the Caspian, Asov and Black Seas in the South. The Canal is 63 miles long; its Completion means the joining of the 18,700 miles of Navigable river in the Volga and North Western basins with 8,000 miles of Navigable rivers of the Don and Dnieper. It will Provide the means for Irrigation and a supply of water for 6,700,000 acres of land in the Rostov and Stalingrad areas Since 1948 an army of builders had excavated 210 million Cubic yards of Earth; four million Cubic yards of Concrete and Ferro-Concrete were required to Strengthen the banks of the Canal.
