Our Distant Relatives -- One of the tiny Tarsiers at the London Zoo. Note the resemblance of their paws to the human hand. Three small animals which recently arrived at the London Zoo are the first of their kind ever to have been seen in this country. They are Tarsiers, flown here from the Philippines, and they are a type of lemur - the nearest approach of that species to man. From head to tall, the tiny animals measure only ten inches in all, the tail taking up 5 inches of that length. So far the Tarsiers have not appear in public at the Zoo - apart from getting acclimatised, their very nervousness makes them fierce, and their keeper wears a glove when handling them. Their interlocking teeth can give a very nasty bite. April 13, 1948. (Photo by Fox).
