U.S. Marines Sleep In Ornate Iwo Jima Foxhole -- U.S. Marines rest in a foxhole dug into the sand of Iwo Jima, Volcano Island bastion 750 miles (1,200 km) from Tokyo, capital of Japan. The roof of the foxhole has a metal reinforcement of airstrip matting for protection against enemy shrapnel. The Marines landed on Iwo, which was under the administration of the Tokyo Metropolis, on Feb, 18, 1945, and brought an end to organized Japanese resistance on March 15, after a bitter, bloody battle.
