Walter Sydney Adams (1876-1956), American astronomer. Adams was the director of the Mount Wilson Observatory from 1923 to 1945. Alongside other scientists, he worked on spectroscopic studies of the Sun, which led to the discovery that sunspots are regions of lower temperatures and have stronger magnetic fields than their surroundings. Adams was awarded the 1928 Bruce Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Photographed circa 1940.
