Illustration of Pierre Savorgnan de BRAZZA (1852-1905), Italian explorer and navy officer, who later became a naturalized French citizen. Brazza's explorations of the Congo paved the way to the establishment of French colonies in West Africa. He founded the city of Brazzaville in 1880. His sudden death from a fever in Dakar in 1905 led to speculation that he had been poisoned.
