Safavid-period brass and steel planispheric astrolabe dating from 1654 to 1655. This astrolabe, from Mashhad, Iran was made by Muhammad Zaman al-Munajjim al-Asturlabi (1643-1689). It has a calligraphic faceplate which reads: 'In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate'. This astrolabe would have been used to find the positions of a planet relative to different astrological houses.
