Light micrograph, stained with the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) method, of a human liver affected by diffuse and very intense fatty degeneration (steatosis). Hepatocytes (liver cells) are loaded with fat (white), which forms large droplets that occupy most of the cell volume. The rest of the hepatocyte cytoplasm is pink, due to the staining of with by the PAS method.
