James Andrew Harris (1932-2000), American nuclear chemist. Harris is best known for being the first black chemist to co-discover new chemical elements. Born in Waco, Texas, USA, Harris graduated with a degree in chemistry from Huston-Tillotson College. For five years, he worked as a radiochemist at Tracerlab Inc. He then moved to the nuclear chemistry department at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in the University of California, Berkeley. Here, Harris was part of a team that identified two unknown elements Element 104 and Element 105. Element 104 was later renamed Rutherfordium and Element 105 was renamed Dubnium. In the 1970s, Harris was the head of the Heavy Isotopes Group at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. Photographed on the 16th of April 1969.
