5951599 Maravijaya Buddha. Thailand. Second half of the 15th. Carving by Thai School, (14th-15th century); (add.info.: Maravijaya Buddha. Thailand. Thai art of Sukhothai, second half of the 15th. Bronze, traces of lacquer and gilding. In Thailand, in the art of Sukhohai, an image of the Buddha was created in the middle of the 14th century. The sculptors sought to transcribe the 32 characteristic bodily marks (lakshana) of the eminent man that was the Buddha. Such works are not surprising by their androgynous character, their flexible model and their proportions away from any anatomical realism. The Buddha is here figure as the winner of Mara ??the demon of the sequence in the cycle of rebirth ??taking the Earth to attest to its merits by touching the ground with his right hand.); Photo by Sylvain Collet; Thai, out of copyright.
