Burke?s photograph of this tented encampment was taken when he was accompanying Lieutenant-General Sir Sam Browne?s Peshawar Valley Field Force as an unofficial photographer. During its advance through the Khyber pass towards Jalalabad (occupied on 20 December 1878), he took many photographs of the landscape and the tribes who lived there. Dakka was situated at the western end of the pass. The Kutchis were nomadic herders who moved to and fro across the borders of Afghanistan and British India with their animals.
