The 56th Regiment was formed on 8 January 1941 as the 56th (London) [Divisional] Battalion Reconnaissance Corps, being redesignated 56th (London) [Divisional] Regiment Reconnaissance Corps on 6 June 1942. From 1 January 1944 onwards it was part of the Royal Armoured Corps and was known as the 56th (London) Reconnaissance Regiment, RAC. The unit was attached to 78th Division between 1 September 1942 until 31 August 1945.
