Born in Ghana, sold as a slave at the age of 8 to a Dutch captain who gave him as a present to Jacobus van Goch, trader of the Dutch West India Company which was granted a charter for trade monopoly in the Dutch West Indies and jurisdiction over Dutch participation in the Atlantic slave trade . Brought to The Hague at 11 and sent to Leiden University to study theology, he returned to the Gold Coast as a missionary.).
