5053256 Drumgold Street, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo) by Frowde, John James (1868-1946); Manx National Heritage (Isle of Man); (add.info.: On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Drumgold St. Old \'Shepherd Inn\' (also Cumberland Tavern?)at far end & the \'Dog\'s Home\' on R - Victoria Tavern. The \'Shepherd\' was licensed up to 1880 at least. There is an advt. of it in Brown\'s \'80 \'Directory\', describing it as facing the sea. I have a boyhood memory of some other hostelry being called a \'tavern\', but can\'t recall it - yes, Bluebell, James St. . Hostels a few, Inns many, just over a century back, and ale houses galore - a cask by the door indicated these. Ale could be purchased even in Drapers\' shops. Have proof that wine & spirits could anyhow, for as stated elsewhere, H. B. Harris\' draper father held a license. The Bluebell looked at Post Office[?]."); by Manx National Heritage .
