The building across the end of the street was formerly the \'Shepherd Inn.\' It is advertised in Brown\'s 1880 Directory as \'having a good view of the sea\'. At an early period this was \'Red Cross Street\', and in the old Lord\'s rent rolls there are frequent references to the Cross or \'the Red Cross\'.
