5052338 Into the inner portion of Spittal\'s Court, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo) by Frowde, John James (1868-1946); Manx National Heritage (Isle of Man); (add.info.: On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Into the inner portion of Spittal\'s Court. Alexander Spittal, father of Major Spittal of the Volunteers (and a picturesque figure with his glowing white beard,) was a man that, \'taking the tide at the flood\', amassed, as Artemus Ward phrased it, \'a handsome pittance\'. Mr H B Noble was an apprentice of Spittal\'s and doubtless, being an observant lad, learned much that proved useful to him later on. He went one better even than old Alex Spittal and proved a benefactor to the town in various ways, with the huge estate he left for distribution by his Trustees." Additional note: "Alexander Spittal was in \'Lauriston\' in 1863. Thwaite\'s Directory on I of M."); by Manx National Heritage .
